the week without internet
If you love something let it go free. If it doesn’t come back, you never had it. If it comes back, love it forever.
I will love the internet forever.
Over the course of last saturday and sunday our internet started to degraded. Before its untimely demise we were getting about 56k. Ah the good ol’ days of dial up—after the days when a computer was just for playing adventure games like Kings Quest and Space Quest—when computers were for chatting on AOL and trying to do something illegal (kidding.. kidding?)
Anyways, then came the worst; our internet decided to stop working entirely. I took a nap.
Our internet came back on wednesday, just an hour or so before the cable guy got to our house (funny how that always happens.) and was nice enough to go out again in an hour or two after he left.
Its funny how as technology—or anything really—advances, how quickly get accustom to our new state of being. Sure, new stuff is exciting at first, but soon, even the iphone will just be another phone, and we’ll all be waiting for the next version, or the next big thing.
Something else that is funny is how fast we get somewhat dependent on things that we become accustom to, and soon take them for granted. Being “unconnected” for a week, even just at home was, sadly, hard to bear and pretty frustrating at times (This probably has something to do with just about everything in my house is connected to the internet some way.) I’m sure if the internet would have gone out forever (please don’t) I would have gotten used to it, and been ok (Its been good to read books again
.)
I think the message here is that you should be thankful for the things (and maybe even people) around you. If your always waiting for the next big thing, you might miss what you have right now. Also, even without the stuff your used to, life isn’t that bad. Reading a book, watching ants, or even just drawing can be just as good as exploring the internet (and sometimes even better.. really!)
